The Folks Behind the Funnies - a Television Documentary

The documentary, The Folks Behind the Funnies gives us the viewer and insight into the minds and the creative genius of this American art form

Everyday, to hundred of millions of readers in almost every nation on earth, comic strip characters appear as familiar friends in newspapers and on the internet. Yet, few of us know much about the artists and writers who bring them to life. Could our favorite comic strip characters be just like their creators?
For the first time, the curtain comes up on some of the America's most famous newspaper comic strips.  In this revealing documentary, twenty-one of the most  syndicated North American cartoonists talk candidly about what make them tick.  They also give us an intimate perspective on their  fellow cartoonists' famous strips and what it takes to keep their finger on the pulse of modern society and values.

The Folks Behind the Funnies brings you up close and personal with the creators of the world's most famous newspaper comic strips.

The artists of Beetle Bailey, Dilbert, The Family Circus, Hagar the Horrible, For Better or For Worse, Dennis the Menace, Zits, and Cathy - just to name a few - share their unique perspective on life and The Funnies.

I had the privilege of interviewing many of the most famous newspaper cartoonists in the world.  A lifelong fan of daily comic strips  - over the years I was fortunate to befriend many of these immensely talented people, who make our lives a little brighter everyday.
What I discovered was the tremendous respect and insight that they had for each other and the comic strip artists and writers who came before them. In short - just like reading 'the comics', it was fun. Now, I want to share it with everyone!

At the National Cartoonists Society's annual Reuben Awards weekend, I  sat down with them individually, to get their take on comic strips and life as they see it.

Hours of great interviews are featured in this upbeat and often irreverent visit with the folks behind, what is affectionately called, The Funnies.

We discover that the artists and writers behind our daily Funnies are as inspiring and familiar as the characters they create.
